For our children, our community, our environment...

How are we an eco-friendly or green childcare center?

Indoor environment:
• We use a rough mat and we cover all shoes with non-skid socks when walking through the center to avoid outside pollutants from getting on the inside.

• We use only biodegradable, non-toxic, mild or least-toxic cleaning products.

• We use only no-VOC latex paints. Volatile organic compounds have been linked to harmful health effects like headaches and cancer.

• We do not permit smoking anywhere on the premises or in sight of the children.

• We use purifiers in all the classrooms.

• We use UVB in the ductwork of the HVAC systems to kill outside debris.

• We do not use scented candles or aerosol air fresheners which may have lead or chlorofluorocarbons.

• We use filters on all faucets or we let the water run for 5-10 seconds for drinking, cooking and making baby formula
.
• All furniture and toys are in good condition (no foam or stuffing exposed).

• We only use furniture made of solid wood. We do not use plywood or particle board which is associated formaldehydes that can give off gas.

• We avoid wall to wall carpet (which gather dirt and expose children to allergens) and use area rugs which are vacuumed daily and cleaned twice a year with non-toxic cleaners.

• We avoid toys made out of soft plastic vinyl (PVC free) to exclude harmful chemicals and avoid lead.

• We use only non-toxic art supplies approved by the Art and Creative Materials institute.

• We securely store and recycle all used batteries and fluorescent light bulbs.

• We use rechargeable batteries in all classrooms toys.

• We never use the microwave to heat food that is in plastic containers, plastic wrap or plastic bags.

• We do not use imported, old or handmade pottery to cook, store, or serve food or drinks.

• We only use digital thermometers that do not contain mercury.

• We bake or steam most of our food.

• We use organic fruits and vegetable whenever possible.

• We shop at Whole Foods Market to incorporate a natural diet.

• We shop at warehouse markets (Bj’s, Sams and Cosco) to avoid the use of plastic bags.

• We use reusable bags when we shop at regular grocery stores.

• We incorporate taking care of the environment into our curriculum.

Outside environment
• We do not have playground equipment made from treated woods.

• We recycle all paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum and plastic bottles.

• We keep our garbage covered at all times to avoid attracting pest and minimize odors.

• We use least toxic pesticides.
